Safer Sleep Week 2025: Creating a Safe and Cosy Sleep Space for Your Baby

What is Safer Sleep Week 2025?

Safer Sleep Week (March 10th–16th) is an annual awareness campaign by The Lullaby Trust, dedicated to helping parents and caregivers create the safest sleeping environment for babies. Since its founding, The Lullaby Trust has contributed to an incredible 80% reduction in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) cases through education and expert advice.

As parents, we all want to ensure our little ones sleep soundly and safely. That’s why at Newbie and Me Baby Store, we’re here to support you with expert tips and trusted products that help make safe sleep simple and stress-free.

Safe Sleep for Newborns: Key Guidelines

Creating a safe sleep space for your baby is easier than you might think. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

1. Always Place Your Baby on Their Back to Sleep

Placing your baby on their back for every sleep (naps and nighttime) is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of SIDS. Once they start rolling over on their own, they’ll naturally find a comfortable position, but always start them on their back.

2. Room-Sharing is Best, But Avoid Bed-Sharing

A common question parents ask is, “Is co-sleeping safe?” The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a cot, crib, or Moses basket in the same room as you for at least the first six months. While bed-sharing can feel tempting for extra cuddles, it increases the risk of accidental suffocation. If you’re wondering, “Is it safe to co-sleep with a 1-year-old?”, the risks are lower than for newborns but still require careful consideration and a safe sleep setup.

3. Keep the Cot Clear and Clutter-Free

Less is more when it comes to your baby’s sleep space! Avoid soft toys, cot bumpers, pillows, and loose blankets, as they can pose suffocation hazards. Instead, use a well-fitted mattress and a safe sleep bag to keep your baby warm and secure.

4. Use a Firm, Flat Mattress

A firm and breathable mattress with a waterproof cover is essential for safe sleep. This helps reduce overheating and provides proper support for your baby’s delicate body.

5. Maintain a Comfortable Room Temperature

Babies sleep best in a room between 16–20°C. Overheating can increase SIDS risk, so dress your little one in breathable layers and use a room thermometer to monitor the temperature.

6. Consider a Dummy for Sleep

Using a dummy when putting your baby down to sleep has been linked to a reduced risk of SIDS. If your baby doesn’t want one, don’t force it—but if they do, just ensure the dummy is not attached to any straps or strings.
