Importance of sleep for New Born Baby's and Parents
Sleep is a vital function that allows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up. Healthy sleep also helps the body remain healthy and stave off diseases. Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly. This can impair your abilities to concentrate, think clearly, and process memories.
Most adults require between seven and nine hours of nightly sleep. Children and teenagers need substantially more sleep, particularly if they are younger than five years of age. Work schedules, day-to-day stressors, a disruptive bedroom environment, and medical conditions can all prevent us from receiving enough sleep. A healthy diet and positive lifestyle habits can help ensure an adequate amount of sleep each night.
Tips to put new-born to sleep
1. Establish a Fitting Schedule and Bedtime
One of the biggest mistakes we see parents make is in setting the schedule. Most people think that the more tired you are, the easier it is to sleep. But this is simply not true, unfortunately. The more overtired you are, the more difficult it is to fall asleep and stay asleep.
This is because our bodies release hormones to fight fatigue and give us a “second wind.”. This is true for babies, too, only they get overtired much faster than adults!
It is very important to look for your baby’s sleepy cues and use appropriate wake windows. Play close attention to your baby. Note the things from the list your baby does, then decide which cue might be the best indicator that baby is ready for a nap.
Know common waketime lengths for your baby’s age.
2. Follow a routine for Bedtime
A bedtime routine is simply a set of steps you follow in a certain order so your baby knows sleep is coming soon. Since the routine is the same every time, this helps them get sleepy easier. While most babies benefit from this structure, some babies seem to need it. Getting your new-born into a bedtime routine is all about consistency. Wake up at consistent times, feed your baby at the same time each day, and pretty soon, your baby will be on a consistent schedule.
A bedtime routine, especially for your new-born, does not have to be very long or complicated.
Most bedtime routines are 10 minutes at nap time and 20-30 minutes at bedtime.
Here is a sample bedtime routine:
- Give baby a bath. Check out our range of bath time baby equipment
- Apply some lotion with lavender for calming comfort.
- With the lotion, do a little baby massage.
- Put on a clean diaper
- Put on your baby’s pyjamas.
- Turn on white noise.
- Swaddle your new-born safely and snugly.
- Feed and burp your baby.
- Rock or sway gently for a few minutes and lay them down on their back in their bassinet, bedside bassinet, or crib.
- Soothe them while in their bed, if necessary, to get them to fall the rest of the way to sleep.
3. Ensure your baby is dressed comfortably
One way how to get a new-born to sleep is to make sure they are comfortable.
For some babies, especially those who are more sensitive, may benefit from a weighted sleep sack. These are especially useful when your baby could benefit from being swaddled but it’s no longer safe or they don’t like it.

4. Check the Sleeping Environment
Your baby’s sleeping environment can make a big difference as to whether it will be easy or hard to stay asleep. A few things to make sure your sleep environment has:
- Darkened Room – Don’t let the sunlight wake your baby prematurely and, likewise, make sure any night lights aren’t too bright!
- Room Temperature – Your baby’s room should be 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (or 20 to 21 degrees Celsius).
Crib Toys – Some families also use mobiles or other crib toys or Night Lights. These can help soothe baby to sleep by playing lullabies or giving baby something to look at as they drift off.
As with many things, every baby has different preferences so you will want to set up your baby’s sleep environment in a way that works for you and for them. You might need to experiment.
